Africa Development Bank (AfDB) has commended Rwanda’s skills development initiative for women and youth empowerment— Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
The team from AfDB made the remarks while assessing TVET programs in Kigali on March, 21, 2014.
The team led by the AfDB Resident Representative in Rwanda Negatu Makonnen included Brian D. McCauley, an International Economist with the Office of International Affairs.
The AfDB team visited to assess progress made through their support in developing the Skills, Employability and Entrepreneurship Programme (SEEP) in Rwanda.
Last year, AfDB approved US$ 39.44-million to fund SEEP programs.
“The country needs to engage more of the private sector in promoting TVET and also creating exposure of existing skills to the international labour market,” said McCauley.
The SEEP targets to reduce critical skills gaps and improve labour market oriented education and in TVET this is affected through strengthening hands –on skills training.
Therefore, the SEEP is expected to help to meet the Government’s objective of generating rapid economic growth, which is required to drive the country towards attaining middle-income status by 2020 and reduce poverty to 30% by 2015.
The AfDB team also visited a Business Incubation Center at IPRC Kigali and one of the companies engaged in woodwork, established by former students.
