Su-kam Power Systems Limited, an India-based power solution company on August 12, 2013 announced plans to install and commission solar photovoltaic equipment for 35 schools across Rwanda.
The power back-up solutions provider said it “has recently bagged a turnkey solar project in Rwanda through the ministry of external affairs”.
Besides the supply, installation and commissioning of solar photovoltaic equipment and associated items at the schools located in rural areas of Rwanda, company officials will also provide on-site training on operation and maintenance to the Rwandan personnel.
“In Africa, many countries do not have the basic infrastructure to set up power plants for energy generation. At such places, solar solutions are the apt and most lucrative ways for meeting power needs,” said Dhananjay Sharma, the company’s general manager for solar business.
Sharma stated that the continent has abundant solar energy that can be tapped and utilized accordingly
With a presence in over 70 countries, including Nigeria, Malawi and Gabon in Africa, Su-Kam has installed wind and solar energy-powered plants for the first time in five remote villages of Malawi.
In Gabon, Su-Kam has electrified rural areas like Kango, Mouila and Bitam.
Rwanda’s Minister of State in Charge of Energy and Water, Eng. Emma Francoise Isumbingabo said the efficiency of solar energy in Rwanda is more than 50 per cent, the government’s target is to gradually tap 215MW from peat, 310MW from geothermal, 320MW from hydro power, and 300MW from methane gas, among others.
At the moment the country produces 110.8MW equivalent to 16 per cent in terms of domestic accessibility. With 1, 000MW, accessibility could reach 70 per cent.
