Academics from across the continent are meeting in Kigali for four days to discuss ways to improve the quality of education in African higher learning institutions Themed “Internationalisation of Higher Education in Africa”, the 18th biennial conference of the Association of African Universities (AUU) attracts more than 300 academicians from 46 African countries. Speaking at the conference that opened on June 2, Rwanda’s Minister of Education Prof. Silas Lwakabamba called upon African higher education stakeholders to play their part diligently for higher education systems on the continent to meet international standards. “I wish to urge this conference to come up with answers on how an internationalized and strong higher education system on the continent will contribute towards transforming Africa’s economy.” Minister Lwakabamba further commended the AUU for always striving to establish education strategies meant to enhance economic transformation across the continent. “Our continent needs to redesign and streamline our higher education systems to respond to our people’s expectations for socio-economic development.” AUU is an international non-government organization set up by African universities in 1967 to promote cooperation among themselves and with the international academic community. Currently, the association has 320 members – higher learning institutions from 46 African countries. Its mission is to raise the quality of higher education in Africa and strengthen its contribution to African development by fostering cooperation and collaboration among its member institutions.
