Rwanda: Agriculture, TVET gets Rwf 11bn boost

The Government of Rwanda and the Republic of Korea signed two financial agreements worth $ 16 Million to build capacity in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and to help transform the agriculture sector.

The agreement will see $ 5 million channeled to supporting capacity building in technical and vocational training and skills development.

The two governments also signed a financial agreement worth $ 11 million to help unlock the rural community through increased agriculture.

The capacity building for financial support will contribute towards activities across all four dimensions of capacity development, including human resources development and organization development, network development and system policy field development, innovation and resource mobilization.

The second contribution of $ 11million has the objective to support Rwanda in achieving its strategic goal of unlocking rural growth in order to increase agriculture production.

It aims at promoting a community-based integrated rural development model following the well-known Saemaul Undong self-sufficient approach of Korea with beneficiaries’ mindset of self-help, diligence and cooperation.

The Rural Community Support Project will also increase agricultural production and marketing in marshland and hillside areas targeted for development.

The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning noted that the support will focus on two crucial areas of the economy.

“We need the necessary skills to support the development process. Agriculture is the biggest contributor of poverty reduction. It contributes significantly to the manufacturing sector as well as the service sector,” he said.

The Ambassador of Korea to Rwanda H.E Hwang Soong-Taik said the support will contribute to sustainable development of in small-scale farming.

“It will also contribute to skills development especially through technical and vocational training.”

The Project will be implemented in 50months (2014-2018) and will be the first project of Korea that will use country systems in Rwanda.

The current Division of Labor (DoL) puts Korea in Education, Agriculture, ICT and silent in Urban and Rural Settlement as well as Health.
